The home office needed a new trackball. For work and private, I have been working with a "Kensington Orbit with offset ring" for a long time and can recommend it as an entry-level model. Disadvantage: only two buttons, plastic looks "cheap"
At work, I switched to the Kensington Slimblade after a heat stroke with displacement ring and was thrilled. Shortage: The price is around 90 euros and the space required.
I've had my eye on thumb trackballs for a while now. Logitech's "top dog" is expensive and after an experience with a TrackMan Marble, I am not very convinced of the quality of Logitech trackballs (the reviews here confirm this).
One drawback of this Logitech model trackball is that it is only available wirelessly. A trackball of this size usually remains on the desktop. Unlike the mouse, it is not pushed and can be operated in a small space. Wireless really just means a useless battery replacement.
The trackball comes in Amazon's usual basic package optimized for shipping. Contents: USB stick, one AA battery, trackball, and instructions. The dongle can be stored in the battery compartment, which is convenient for storage or transportation. The rubber coating is extensive and seems glued with it. The first impression is also positive: the spaces, the craftsmanship, the feel is great, the ball is slightly smaller than the Kensingtons, but it runs clean. Plastic is significantly more valuable than the Orbit in the same price range, but it doesn't come close to the Slimblade.
The shape of the trackball also fits comfortably in the hand and takes up most of the hand, only part of the little finger and the right side of the wrist are on the table. The palm can be raised slightly higher to allow for a more relaxed hand-arm position. Unfortunately, there is no wrist rest, you may have to put something underneath for cushioning.
It is surprisingly light and therefore, despite the good rubber coating, it slides back and forth too easily for my taste.
Installation (on Linux) is a piece of cake: insert the battery, plug the dongle into the USB port and you're done. The middle DPI switch can be selected between 2 resolutions/speeds. The scroll wheel is also the third button on the mouse and next to the left mouse button there are forward/back buttons.
I set a low mouse speed with a medium to high acceleration. This setting now reaches 1900 DPI and the mouse pointer zooms across the screen with a monkey tooth. After pressing the DPI button, the mouse works as it should: quietly and accurately.
Bottom line: good workmanship and function, ergonomics better than most mice, but there is room for improvement. In terms of price, the trackball is definitely the best. If you prefer conventional trackballs or want better ergonomics, Kensington is recommended.
